What to wear? We are told by our bellman that officially the dress code is "business casual," but... Sundance has a philosophy of being very casual, so jeans are even okay (as long as they were purchased from the Sundance catalogue!). So, it's okay to dress up if you like, but it's not at all necessary.
How's the food? Excellent! Prepared by a gourmet chef and served by multiple personnel. Your water will never be left empty and your cloth napkin will be replaced if you ever get up from the table.
To start off our dining experience, freshly baked rolls were served with butter or virgin olive oil. Appetizers include soups, salads and vegetables. And, the entrees on our menu were based on a variety of meats, including: buffalo, wild boar, ahi tuna, mountain trout, lamb, steak, chicken and short ribs. The one vegetarian choice was homemade Fettuccini Alfredo.
Compliments of the chef... we received a bisque with a slice of breast of duck and currants at the beginning of the meal. At the end of our meal, we received a dark chocolate tart topped with a fresh raspberry after our entree.
The Sundance Tree Room Restaurant also employs a pastry chef so desserts are very scrumptious.
Prices for each item are listed on the menu.
How's the atmosphere? This four star restaurant offers romantic lighting with candles at every table and soft jazzy music playing in the background . Native American art and pictures of Robert Redford in various cowboy/western movies adorn the walls.
Where we sat, we could look out of two large windows with views of gorgeous fir trees. If you dine when it's still light outside, you will enjoy the beautiful view.
History of Sundance Tree Room Restaurant. The Tree Room restaurant, built in 1970 was one of the first upgrades to Sundance Village. During construction, Redford attempted to save a towering pine tree... and built around it. Unfortunately, the tree still died and had to be cut down to the stump to avoid branches falling onto the building.
A Ski Magazine reports: "When out of public ear shot, some of the staff now affectionately refer to it as "the Stump Room."
Helpful Tips. Let the guy order the meal for the lady. This seemed to be the proper ordering etiquette.
Make reservations ahead of time because the Tree Room is very popular. We tried calling when we checked in and our only options were to eat at 5pm or 9pm. During busy times, like Winter, Summer, weekends or holidays, you may want to call from home to make a reservation.
The menu lists several different food items that are served with the entree, but be aware that the portions are small. You'll definitely have room for dessert!
If you have a party of 5 or more at the Sundance Tree Room restaurant, they automatically add a 19% gratuity to the bill.
